The intangible joy of supporting ....
"There is something extremely valuable and yet intangible in receiving heartfelt thanks for supporting the dreams and interests of others."
I read this as part of an article I was browsing this morning and it hit a chord.
As part of my "inner circle", I have a handful of friends with whom I have built a strong bond - so much so that their dreams, challenges, life interests have become very close to me!
As much as a people's person as I may be, membership to this elite club of mine is by invitation only...and I have stringent "house" rules!!! But what is common to this small club is that each of the members mean a lot to me and I feel I am an important part of their lives, in however small a way. I have not known all of them for long, some since my childhood, a few since my early career and some as recent as the past 1-2 years. Yet, I feel a strong "connect" and keep in regular touch with them, mostly through technology.
All of them are as happy to have me in their lives as I am to have them in mine. All have , at some point of time or the other, expressed their thankfulness for me being "me".......at times, driving them mad with my idiosyncrasies , at times, making them laugh at my antics or PJs, at times, admonishing them for doing stuff that is alien to me, at time, just listening to them talk about their troubles or challenges or at times, pushing them to take on Life head on - always looking at the glass half full!
But what I have felt is that with each of these relationships that are so dear to me, I was the one that got the most out of it .....I learnt new perspectives, I lived their different lives and understood how different each of our roads are and that there is no 1 road to success..... and I became more open and more capable of loving, giving, supporting!
And yes, its difficult to measure the value of this relationship - intangible but very real....and an important part of my being - a reason why I called myself "blessed"!
The joy of giving is truly wonderful and most of the times, you don't have to give anything very expensive or even material - just a smile, or a helping hand, or a listening ear, a word of encouragement, a bit of your time ..... it may mean the world to the one receiving and to you, bring an amazing sense of peace and happiness.
So I continue to thank the Lord for all the opportunities He has given me to reach out to my "inner circle" - and to make a small difference in their lives simply by being there.
I also would like to reach out to my "inner circle" ( and they know who they are ) and say - thank you for coming in and staying and enriching my life. However, near or far, I am with you and your dreams, fears and hopes mean a lot to me, too. Just as I am supportive of your endeavors, I also gain strength from you and even though we are not connected by blood, you are a part of my being today...
