Endless love ...
Dec 12, 2013
I watched a cinematic adaptation of Tagore's famous work, "Shesher Kobita" as part of the Dubai International Film Festival.
Unlike most Bongs, I have unfortunately not read the original piece and hence was oblivious of the story line....I did however know that it was extremely popular with the Bengali intellectuals and the eternal poets within most Bong souls!I also knew it was about "Love" ....apart from politics, Bengalis usually have most to talk about this topic!!
However, the title always baffled me with its negative tone - "shesh" or "last" means an end, right? And "true" love was never meant to end, so how did this work?
Watching the movie unfold, I got my answer ....and am now reading the novel too, for better understanding.
The answer is very simple, actually....something a lot of us never understand, or struggle with....it is that "True love is boundless". Period.
It does not have to fall into any set pattern of observed behaviors, it also need not be between 2 so called "compatible" people, it does not mean "possession".....much to the contrary, it means letting go, complete freedom but an existence in a special space between 2 souls that make each other happy.
Lucky are those who have experienced this kind of love that is able to "let go" and yet bond ...
Amit and Labanya were one of the lucky ones ... and I quote one of my favorite lines from the piece where Amit claims his sincerity for both his lady loves:
....One is like the space where he flies like a bird in freedom, it is boundless, it is in his live imagination. Another is more basic, practical, which he uses like a pot of water, everyday, but it is equally worthy.....
We all live and we all love.
May we also have the courage and confidence to re-look at our loves, our relationships and understand how much space is required in between ...how much we should hold on to, and how much should we set free....so that our love is truly endless...

"Ketaki and I - our love is like water in my kalsi (jug) ; I fill it each
morning, and use it all day long.
But Labanya's love is like a vast lake,
not to be brought home, but into which my mind can immerse itself."
