Oxytocins, Serotonins ... or whatever makes you feel good!

I have realized something - Amir Khan (or Chetan Bhagat)  in the movie "3 Idiots" was right after all.....always had a nagging feeling about it and now I am convinced. If we keep saying "All izz well" to our hearts and minds, they kind of start believing the same and act accordingly.....idiots hein, right??

Now that I read up some stuff about it, there could even be a science to it.....a logical explanation about "feel good hormones"like Oxytocins, Serotonins and chemical reactions within our bodies that cause us to feel good, happy or positive. Won't go into the research behind all of this (please Google if you have to) but it seems solid!

I have seen for a fact that when things go wrong, as they often do, if we can keep our minds distracted with the good stuff, things no longer seem to be as wrong as before - atleast mentally, you are able to cope better.

So for example, here I am getting deeper and deeper into irritating and nagging health issues ( amongst others ) but I keep the focus on an upcoming holiday I am planning with my family later this summer and I get into details whenever I am in pain or feeling blue, and voila, the "idiot" mind succumbs ....and I feel not too bad, again - even good. Must be those "hormones"....Bless them :)

Whatever it is ....it works! And I urge you all to try it ....more and more, no bad side effects guaranteed.

When things look a little blurry, and you are finding it difficult to stop the shoulders from drooping, try these:

  • Call up a friend and share some mindless laughs - simple cackling over the stupidest of stuff can work like therapy; only try it with a friend, if you want to avoid police or being classified as a lunatic :)
  • Hug someone - preferably someone you love and care about; though Munnabhai taught us otherwise, too! If that is not you, imagine you are hugging someone or cuddling up....research tells me that works too!!! Remember the idiot brain??
  • Laugh - watch a movie that you know will have you holding your stomach, call your funniest friend, listen to Russell Peters, whatever  - and see the difference, even if momentarily.
  • Walk - not the gym types, just a gentle amble across a place that preferably looks good and just soak in the sights, the people and the ambience. Cleansing ....
  • Soothing music - now that's difficult to define; but if you love music like i do, you have a tool no one can take away from you, to counter every depressive mood or negativity. Lose yourself in those melodies, let your mind wander where the musical notes lovingly pulls it along...like a caring friend. Bliss!
  • Even Facebook .....hook up with people who were a part of your life long before and find out how they are doing, "Like" their kids' pictures or screech at yours, posted by family or school friends....its a great way to connect and "disconnect". Just don't get too hooked!
I personally do all of the above - anytime I feel low and every time it works like a charm! Even if for a while, it lifts me from the blurry situations and while it may not help me to resolve these problems, it helps me step back, re-energize and then address the problem with more zeal and enthusiasm.

So here's to all those unpronounceable names that say nothing to me, but do me a world of good. Thank you for being there for me.

Feel good about yourselves, amigos! We can take on almost anything ...
